Walt Disney foreign arm Buena Vista Film Sales will handle international distribution of the long-delayed Touchstone release THE THIRTEENTH WARRIOR, starring Antonio Banderas. The John McTiernan-helmed pic, based on the novel "Eaters of the Dead" by Michael Crichton, finished shooting in November 1997 but is not due for release in the U.S. until summer 1999. THIRTEENTH was one of the last pics to be put into production by Andy Vajna's Cinergi. Following Cinergi's demise, Touchstone agreed to oversee production and handle worldwide distribution of the pic. Set in 922 A.D., THIRTEENTH is about an Arab courtier (Banderas) who falls in with a group of Viking conquerors. Soon after, something begins killing them and eating their flesh. The historical thriller, which has a reported budget of more than $60 million, co-stars Diane Venora, Omar Sharif, Maria Bonnevie and Sven Wolter. McTiernan, Crichton and Ned Dowd produced. If Disney believes it can get more money for a certain pic on the open market, then the studio is increasingly inclined to hand it over to BVFS, as opposed to distributing it via Buena Vista Intl. BVFS is headed by senior VP of business affairs and acquisitions Jere Hausfater. However, BVI could still take the pic in certain overseas territories. Other Touchstone pics that BVFS has sold internationally include Spike Lee's HE GOT GAME, starring Denzel Washington. In the past, Hausfater has also acquired several big-budget pics from other studios for international distribution via BVI. These include Paramount Pictures' SNAKE EYES and FACE OFF, and Beacon Pictures' AIR FORCE ONE. Other new titles on BVFS' slate are the Gwyneth Paltrow starrer DUETS. However, that pic does not have a domestic distributor.
